North girls lacrosse goes out a winner; Knoch softball rolls: Roundup

North Catholic girls lacrosse closed the season with a dominating 19-5 victory against host West Allegheny on Thursday.

Kate Geary scored three times for the Trojanettes (9-7) while Natalie Milcoff, Molly Croft, Gabby Hervert, Chloe Lundy and Izzy Kurpeikis each found the net twice.

Emily Birchok made seven saves to earn the win in net.

Softball

Punxsutawney scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and never allowed Moniteau to pull even in a 9-3 defeat of the Warriors.

Alyssa Thompson totaled three hits, including a double, for Moniteau.

Upper St. Clair 4, North Catholic 1 — Three errors by the Trojanettes (12-5) led to three unearned runs and spoiled a solid pitching effort by Clare Kotwica, who struck out eight and walked none in six innings.

Mary Kotwica tripled and drove in North’s only run, which gave the Trojanettes a brief lead in the top of the third inning.

Knoch 17, Mars 0 — Emersyn Jones had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in three runs for Knoch (16-2) in this five-inning game.

In the circle, she fanned 12, walked two and shut out the Planets (2-14) on three hits.

Shaler 10, Seneca Valley 8 — Despite home runs from Hannah Hornick and Riley Geyer, the Raiders (14-5) fell in their regular-season finale. Geyer tallied four RBIs.

Grove City 21, Slippery Rock 4 — In this shortened five-inning game, Lillian Campbell hit a home run for the Rockets.

Lily Rihel doubled three times and drove in four runs for GC. Remi Stillwagon homered and collected six RBIs.

Baseball

Karns City scored all of its runs in the second through fourth innings in an 8-2 defeat of Cranberry.

Xavier Bartoe pitched a complete game for the win with six strikeouts, one walk, and allowed the two runs on eight hits.

Valley 4, Freeport 2 — Vikings’ pitchers Dominick Dunkel and Nikolas Heakins limited the Yellowjackets to four hits.

Ashton Bricker homered for Freeport (17-1), which suffered its first loss of the season. Luke Whitfield added two hits, including a double.

Ellwood City 3, Knoch 0 — The Knights (12-8) managed just three hits off of the Wolverines’ pitching duo of Aaron Lake and Nate Kennedy.

Knoch starter Hunter Lang struck out seven, walked three and did not allow a run on just one hit in four innings.

Track & Field

Lydia Springirth led Slippery Rock’s effort at the Mercer County Invitational, placing first in the girls 300 hurdles with a time of 50.1 seconds.

Earning runner-up finishes were Hunter Doerflinger (boys 400 run, 52.04) and Rhenna Humphrey (girls 100 hurdles, 16.84).

Samantha Montgomery took third in the girls long jump and triple jump. Cameron Gerken did likewise in both hurdles events.

Butler shines at last-chance meets — At West Mifflin High School, Ava DeLorenzo won the girls triple jump (35-6) and Halle Swidzinski the pole vault (10-7).

At Pine-Richland, sophomore Avery Sintz placed fourth in the 1,600 run at 5:15.89, moving her into sixth place on Butler’s all-time list.

Boys volleyball

Seneca Valley swept Mars by scores of 25-11, 25-9 and 25-15. No other details were provided.

Seton LaSalle 3, North Catholic 0 — The Rebels took care of the Trojans by scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-18.
