Quaker Valley beat reigning champion North Catholic to claim the WPIAL Class 2A Boys Tennis Team Championship title Tuesday at Washington & Jefferson College.

The No. 5 Quakers won 3-2, claiming their fifth title. The No. 2 Trojans qualify for the PIAA tournament, which begins May 12 and ends with the championships at Hershey Racquet Club on May 16. They beat No. 15 Ellwood City, No. 10 Hampton and No. 6 Indiana to make the district final.

North Allegheny won the 3A title.

The Trojans’ Alex Weber won in Singles 2 against Tanner Schultz 6-4, 6-3, according to head coach Sean Malone, and Jake Sinclair beat Charlie Pyle 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in Singles 3. North won a regular-season match against QV 3-2, but Pyle’s return from injury played a role in the Quakers being able to sweep the doubles matchups this time.

“Alex Weber played phenomenal to win in straight sets for us,” Malone said over the phone. “I was really impressed with the improvement he’s shown (this season).”

It gives North two state tournament qualifiers, with top singles player Justin Garvey qualifying for the PIAA singles tournament as the WPIAL’s third seed. That tournament runs May 22-23 at Hershey Racquet Club.
