North Catholic girls track and field claims first WPIAL team championship
North Catholic girls track and field coach Terry Fisher believed his 4x400-meter relay team had not yet reached its potential.
Maybe the Trojanettes will go on to post a better time this season, but their 4:05.2 on Tuesday brought with it some major hardware.
The effort turned in by Alexis Stoltz, Megan Heinbach, Ella Eiler and anchor Lydia Pierce was enough to push North past Quaker Valley 77-73 at Peters Township’s Confluence Financial Partners Stadium, earning the Trojanettes the WPIAL Class 2A team championship, the first of its kind in school history.
North also defeated Laurel (86-63) and Burrell (115-35) at the meet.
The Quakers were four-time defending district champions and led North 73-72 prior to the relay.
“Our best time this season was 4:07 and Quaker’s was 4:05,” Fisher said. “But I was confident we could run a better time. (Quaker Valley) is a great program with some great athletes, but we’re extremely talented and have a lot of depth in certain events.”
Freshman Callie Kandravy went 19 feet, 4 inches to set a school record and win the long jump. She was followed by Audra Lazzara and Anna Lazzara, who took second and third.
Audra Lazzara won the 100 hurdles and Anna Lazzara the 100 dash. They teamed with Madelyn Primer and Alana Eiler to win the 4x100 relay.
Primer, Alana Eiler and Ella Eiler went top three overall in the 200 dash.
“We tell the girls to not be complacent and continue to work hard,” Fisher said. “I’m extremely proud of how they have combined work ethic and talent. The results speak for themselves.”
North’s boys also reached the WPIAL’s final four, but joined Greensburg Central Catholic and Riverview in falling to champion Quaker Valley.
The Trojans featured three overall winners — Jack Kandravy (100 dash), Logan Schade (400 run) and the 4x100 relay team of Schade, Kandravy, Will Waskiewicz and Ryan Snyder.
