Bomb threat at Mars Area High School causes security sweep

Mars Area School District officials and law enforcement took action after a bomb threat written on a bathroom wall was discovered at the high school Tuesday, Oct. 13.

According to a message sent to parents by superintendent Mark Gross, the district was made aware of a bomb threat that referenced the date Friday, Oct. 16. Gross said the district immediately contacted the Adams Township Police Department.

“Upon notification of the threat, the district immediately contacted Adams Township Police, which, along with other law enforcement personnel, conducted a thorough sweep of the building. No device was found and police officials have deemed the building to be safe,” Gross said.

Police and bomb-sniffling dogs swept the building in the afternoon. Further security measures, including additional sweeps of the building, will be in place for the remainder of the week. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available, the district said.

After-school activities at Mars Area High School were moved to Mars Area Middle School. All evening activities at the high school will take place as scheduled.

This is the second threat in several weeks to affect Mars Area School District. A swatting incident on Sept. 30 caused all Butler County school districts to temporarily lock down.
