Election certified in 12th House District
The Butler County Bureau of Elections has officially certified the results for the state 12th House District special election held Aug. 18.
The special election saw Democratic candidate Brandon Dukes win by 98 votes, according the bureau of elections. He beat Republican Scott Timko 8,470 to 8,372, or 50.19% to 49.61%. The total also included 35 write-in votes.
Voter turnout for the special election reached just over 32%.
According to the certified results, the vote count was made up of 11,468 in-person votes on Election Day and 5,356 mail-in ballot votes.
Chantell McCurdy, director of the elections bureau, previously said the earliest the results could be certified would be Thursday, Aug. 27, if no candidate challenged the count. McCurdy said Thursday morning the totals had only changed by one vote since unofficial results were fully uploaded the day after the election, Aug. 19.
The special election was held to fill the final months of former Rep. Stephenie Scialabba’s term ending at the end of the year. Scialabba resigned in March.
Dukes and Timko will face each other in a rematch in the November general election for a full term in the seat.
