Seneca Valley softball’s Neve Miller comes up homer shy of cycle vs Butler: Roundup

Neve Miller, Julia Valasek and Paige Volz each had multi-hit efforts as Seneca Valley downed Butler 11-6 on the softball diamond Wednesday.

Miller came a home run shy of hitting for the cycle and pushed across three base runners, while Abby Kalkowski bashed one over the fence.

Khloe Brown and Kaylin Garbinski had two hits apiece for the Golden Tornado.

Greensburg Salem 7, Freeport 5 — Arianna Devlin had two base knocks for the Yellowjackets.

New Castle 9, Mars 0 — Alyssa Foltz had two of the Planets’ four hits in this loss.

Track and field

Noah Rieger won both the 100 and 200 meters, and Dakari Payne placed first in the 110-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump and triple jump as Seneca Valley’s boys downed North Allegheny 97.5-52.5.

The Raiders move to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in section competition. They’ll face off with Butler for the section title Tuesday.

North Allegheny 101, Seneca Valley (girls) 49 — Jordan Monteleone (high jump), Tennyson Voll (pole vault), Kate Skeen (long jump) and Audrey Wolfe (javelin) won individual events for Seneca Valley (7-1, 4-1 section).

The Raiders face off with Butler on Tuesday, with the winner qualifying for the WPIAL team playoffs.

Moniteau (girls) 94.5, Redbank Valley 54.5 — Emily Matz won the 100 (13.8 seconds), 300 hurdles (49.5) and long jump (15-3.5) for the Warriors.

Karns City (boys) 102, North Clarion 48 — Bryce Galan (100, 200), Alex Wilson (long jump, pole vault) and Kolby Blair (shot put, discus) won events for the Gremlins.

Redbank Valley 121, Moniteau (boys) 29 — Aiden Kern (400, 200) was a double winner for the Warriors.

Baseball

Slippery Rock plated five in their half of the sixth inning, including home runs by Doug Popovec, Connor Zorn and Jacob Kunsman, tying its matchup with Hickory at six runs apiece, but a lightning delay was called after the frame.

The umpires opted to end the game, with the score reverting back to the fifth inning by rule and leading to a 6-1 Rockets loss.

Slippery Rock falls to 3-3 and faces Mercer on Friday.

Mars 6, Fox Chapel 3 — In a continuation of Tuesday’s matchup, which was postponed because of storms, the Planets got three RBIs from Danny Murray. Mars permitted just three hits in the win.

Freeport 9, Deer Lakes 5 — Trey Schreckengost had two hits as the Yellowjackets improved to 10-0 (6-0 in section play).

Boys lacrosse

Drew Ross scored four goals and dished out three assists in Freeport’s 16-1 win over Allderdice.

Brayden Riddell and Jameson Micelli also scored four times, with Riddell adding a pair of assists and Micelli one of his own.

Flag football

Gabby Valentine threw two touchdowns to Lizzie Fabian in North Catholic’s 21-20 loss to Fox Chapel. Simone Sharpless added a touchdown on the ground.

Boys volleyball

Maddox McCall had 10 aces in Butler’s 3-0 blowout of Summit Academy, and Rowan Fallstaedt had five kills and four blocks for the Golden Tornado (11-2).

OLSH 3, Mars 0 — Set scores were 25-14, 25-12 and 26-24. No stats were provided.

Armstrong 3, North Catholic 0 — The Trojans lost 25-22, 25-18, 25-16. No stats were provided.
