Butler pitchers deal in shutout win, Slippery Rock hits 3 HRs, Caruso leads Freeport softball in win: Roundup

Nolan Stefaniak and Trent Best combined for a two-hit gem as Butler baseball blanked Hempfield 5-0 to improve to 9-3 (4-2 WPIAL Section 1-6A) this season.

Stefaniak, an MLB draft prospect, struck out nine and didn’t give up a hit in four innings. He also went 1-for-1 with an RBI and three walks at the plate. Nash Cuffman was 1-for-2 with a triple, run and two RBIs from the nine hole.

Freeport 5, Deer Lakes 3 — Marco Wolfe doubled home Gage Blystone, and Luca Pollino singled home Wolfe to give Freeport the win in nine innings and preserve an undefeated start to the season.

The Yellowjackets are now 9-0 after Ashton Bricker (2-for-5) homered and drove in two runs. Gavin Toyla went 3-for-5 with a run scored.

Valley 6, Knoch 1 — Dante Pelloni (2-for-3) doubled and scored the Knights’ lone run as they dropped a second straight game for the first time this season to slip to 9-3.

Slippery Rock 13, Oil City 2 — Jake Kunsman, Doug Popovec and Parker Dalcamo all went yard in the Rockets’ five-inning rout.

Slippery Rock (3-1) got five strong innings on the bump from Kunsman and Dom Mineo, with four strikeouts combined.

Fox Chapel 2, Mars 1 — Danny Murray went 1-for-3 and scored the Planets’ lone run as they managed just five hits to fall to 5-8.

North Catholic 4, Hampton 3 — Landon Petok hit a single up the middle to walk it off for the Trojans (5-5), driving in Matthew Madonna for the game-winning run.

Petok finished 2-for-4, and Madonna went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and a homer.

Seneca Valley 6, North Hills 1 — The Raiders (7-5) have won three of the last four after a rough patch thanks to a complete-game, nine-strikeout performance by Luis Torrenegra on the mound.

Brandon Godleski (2-for-3) doubled and drove in three, and Danny Drennan (1-for-3) scored three times.

Softball

A five-run second inning gave Freeport plenty of cushion to beat Highlands 10-4.

Addyson Caruso went 3-for-4 with four runs, three RBIs and a pair of doubles, and Mady Bell went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI.

Knoch 13, Valley 0 — Lindsey Wise and Emersyn Jones scattered four hits in the circle in the five-inning win, with Jones punching out eight batters.

Jones at the plate doubled and scored, and Marlee Fraser (2-for-2) had two two-baggers, a pair of RBIs and a run. Alena Tekely (1-for-2) hit a solo homer.

Seneca Valley 10, Mt. Lebanon 0 — The Raiders improved to 8-1 after the five-inning shutout thanks to Emry Rice’s four RBIs and run scored. She finished 3-for-3 with a double from the leadoff spot.

Rachael Dunmire fired a one-hitter, fanning two. Abby Kalkowski was 2-for-3 with a double, run and RBI.

North Allegheny 11, Butler 2 — The Tornado fell to 1-9. Kyra Olivares and Kaylin Garbinski each went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Mikayla Crouch doubled and scored both runs.

North Catholic 7, Western Beaver 2 — The Trojanettes (6-1) won a sixth straight. Kennedy Brown (1-for-2) tripled, scored and drove in two, and Dakota Hicks (2-for-3) and Lauren Golebiewski (1-for-3) each doubled. Hicks reached home, and Golebiewski knocked home two runs.

North Hills 10, Mars 0 — Alyssa Foltz and Paige Lauten had the only two hits for the Planets (2-7).

Wilmington 9, Slippery Rock 0 — Grace Greer was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the loss. Aubrie Knight (1-for-3) knocked home a run.

Boys lacrosse

North Catholic held on to beat Knoch 12-10 after building a 5-1 lead in the first quarter and extending it to 10-4 in the third.

Jake Jones and Gavin Danehy each had hat tricks for the Knights, with Jones adding two assists. Ethan Kaper recorded two goals and two assists. Connor Weiland stopped 10 shots in the loss.

Flag football

North Allegheny rolled to a 64-14 win over Mars, which saw Ava Pulliam hit Mia Gratton for a pair of touchdown passes.

Boys tennis

North Catholic beat Quaker Valley 3-2 with wins in Singles 2 and 3 and Doubles 1. No names or individual scores were provided in this one.

Boys volleyball

Shaler swept North Catholic 3-0 by set scores of 25-13, 25-21, 25-16. No stats were made available.
