Hotel floor evacuated due to gasoline fumes
A man is facing charges after the floor of the hotel where he was staying was evacuated early Tuesday morning because of a strong odor from a gas can he had in his room.
Jerry Joseph Dimondo, 40, of Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County, was charged with a felony count of risking catastrophe and a misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment by Cranberry Township police following the incident.
Police responded to the Hampton Inn on Pendleton Way at 1:44 a.m. after a guest complained about a strong odor of gasoline on the fourth floor.
According to court documents, officers immediately noticed the odor and contacted Dimondo in his room. He was standing in the room with the door ajar and the odor was coming from his room, according to an affidavit.
Guests on the floor were evacuated due to the possibility of explosion and fire, according to the affidavit.
Police said he made statements that were not consistent with the questions he was being asked about the odor before closing and locking the door and refusing to speak with officers.
A gasoline can was found in his room, police said.
