Callery officially adopts fire tax for 2027

CALLERY — Borough council has adopted a 1.75-mill fire tax, which will take effect at the start of the 2027 fiscal year, to provide much-needed funding to the Callery Volunteer Fire Company.

Borough estimates that it will generate around $7,100 per year — roughly $40.75 per household for each of Callery’s 175 households — through the fire tax.

Council opted to add the tax in lieu of the fire department’s originally-proposed funding solution of a three-year service contract. Under that contract, the borough would make annual financial contributions to the department, with the amount gradually rising from $6,457.50 in year one to $7,119 in year three.

The ordinance for the proposed tax was approved for advertisement at last month’s meeting on Oct. 5.

At Monday night’s meeting, Don Adams was officially appointed to the council to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation last month of council member Crystal Huffman. Huffman recently moved out of Callery, making her ineligible under the borough code to serve as a council member.

Adams previously served as a full-time council member from 2021 to 2025.

The council also voted to hire Corey Novak as a part-time officer for the Callery Borough Police Department.

In addition, council voted to move meetings for 2027 to the second Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m., rather than the first Monday of the month at 7 p.m. where they are currently scheduled.
