A Moon Township man who was wounded at President Donald Trump’s 2024 rally at the Butler Farm Show grounds has died.

James Copenhaver, who was shot twice during the assassination attempt against Trump, was 76, according to the House Republican Caucus, which announced his death on X early Thursday afternoon.

Copenhaver was one of two civilians injured by gunfire during the rally. David Dutch, of New Kensington, was shot once. Corey Comperatore, 50, a Sarver resident and fire chief, was killed.

Copenhaver’s cause of death is not known.

Copenhaver and Dutch, along with their wives, separately sued the U.S. government saying injuries suffered in the incident are attributable to failures by the U.S. Secret Service. Copenhaver was shot twice, once in the tricep and once in the abdomen.

A bipartisan U.S. House task force formed to investigate the shooting and the circumstances leading up to it, found numerous shortcomings in how security at the event was planned and carried out.
