Adams Township installs temporary disc golf course at community park
Disc golf enthusiasts in Butler County have one more place to play this fall, as Adams Township officially opened a temporary, three-hole course at its community park on Tuesday, Sept. 22.
The course, which will remain open for a six-week trial period, can be accessed from the parking lot of the park’s Splash Pad water park. All three holes are par 3.
Township parks and recreation director Brian Perry said the township is using the six-week trial period to gauge the residents’ interest in the sport of disc golf.
“We know it's been successful in some other municipalities, so we figured we'd see if it's something that our residents would like,” Perry said. “Instead of just putting a questionnaire out there or a survey on the internet, we decided to put something tangible out there so people could come check it out and try to make their own judgments.”
Perry said he and the township have received recurring questions from residents about the possibility of bringing disc golf to the park.
“We have had several residents come and ask what type of interest we have in building one,” Perry said. “We figured this would be a great opportunity to kind of gauge the interest.”
The course will only be open for play during daylight, and will have “loaner discs” for those who don’t have their own to play with.
The disc golf course adds one more offering to the community park, which already features facilities for pickleball, basketball, baseball, and multisport fields, as well as the Splash Pad.
Other disc golf courses exist at Moraine State Park (in the Lakeview Beach section of the park), North Boundary Park in Cranberry Township, Harcrest Park in Penn Township, and Alameda Park in Butler.
Moraine’s course recently hosted a major disc golf event, the PDGA Junior Disc Golf World Championships, in July. The park is also set to host the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Championship on Oct. 10 and 11.
