Two mosquito samples collected from Zelienople tested positive for West Nile virus, but no human cases have been reported, the Mercer County Conservation District reported Wednesday, Aug. 19.

These represent the third and fourth positive mosquito samples for Butler County this year, the conservation district, which covers Butler County, said.

“Additional monitoring will be done in the area where these mosquito samples were collected, and appropriate control work will be conducted, depending on the number and types of mosquitoes that are found,” a news release from the district said.

Residents and businesses in Zelienople are asked to take precautions, such as applying insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants outdoors during dusk and dawn.

Mosquito breeding habitats can be reduced by eliminating standing water, such as bird baths, discarded tires or any other containers capable of retaining standing water.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health said about 80% of people do not develop West Nile virus symptoms, but those who do may experience fever, body aches, nausea, vomiting and rashes. People older than 60 or those with certain medical conditions also may be more susceptible to illness.

About 1 in 150 people will develop severe illness with symptoms including blindness, disorientation, coma, convulsions, headache, high fever, muscle weakness, neck stiffness, numbness, paralysis, stupor and tremors.

Tips to prevent mosquito bites:

· Insect repellants with DEET can be applied as directed to exposed skin and clothing.

· Stay indoors at dawn, dusk and early evening when mosquitoes are most active. If you must go outdoors, wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants.

· Make sure window and door screens are bug tight.

· Mosquitoes are repelled by high winds, so electric fans may provide some relief at outdoor events.
