Cranberry’s Armstrong Great Lawn designated a ‘great public space’
The Pennsylvania chapter of the American Planning Association designated the Armstrong Great Lawn, located in front of the Cranberry Township Municipal Center, as one of the great public spaces in the state.
In a Monday, Aug. 17, news release, the association identified several features of the space: pedestrian pathways, a story walk, fountains, shaded picnic tables with lounge chairs and memorial benches, and a reading garden to support the adjacent library.
Formerly the municipal center’s parking lot, the current lawn was redesigned by the township to serve as 2.5 acres of outdoor gathering space, which now also hosts community events.
The Armstrong Great Lawn opened in November 2024 and was the township’s 2024 Community Chest Project of the Year.
Bruce Hezlep, chairman of the township’s board of supervisors, acknowledged the recognition at the board’s July 30 meeting. He said the lawn is meant to be a place for residents to meet other members of the community.
“I just wanted to congratulate the staff on a great job,” he said. “It’s a great place, and we’re very proud of you.”
American Planning Association is a nonprofit organization that represents urban and regional planners. Its Pennsylvania chapter picks places for recognition annually. This year, it selected four public spaces for recognition.
