Cranberry, Jackson municipal boundary to be discussed at Aug. 19 joint meeting

Cranberry and Jackson township officials have been working for months to determine a more defined boundary between the two municipalities.

The two townships will meet jointly at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Cranberry Highlands Golf Course, 5601 Freshcorn Road, to consider an ordinance that would establish a precise and up-to-date boundary.

The meeting will facilitate an ongoing legal process which was sparked by the proposal of a development, Kobe Point, along the border.

The 60-acre site, with 42 single-family homes and 28 townhouses on Pattison Street Ext., had received final approval from Jackson Township in February.

Unclear borders

Cranberry Township’s northern border and Jackson Township’s southern border share a common boundary, but neither township has access to their municipal charters, originally drawn in the 19th century, anymore.

Ensuing confusion and varying perspectives about where the boundary lies have followed over time in property deeds, development plans and tax maps.

“There’s a lot of conflicting information out there,” Dan Santoro, Cranberry Township manager, said.

Leading up to the meeting, both townships have jointly reviewed available records and reached a mutual understanding of a boundary location.

The next steps, which Santoro said will likely take a couple of months, are notifying property owners along the boundary and receiving feedback from those property owners.

Based on the feedback, an ordinance will be considered at a future board meeting, which Santoro anticipates will take place in September.

He said boundary issues of this sort are not uncommon. In the 1990s, Cranberry Township underwent a similar process with Adams Township.

Santoro said the goal of the meeting is to a strike a line without affecting resident perception of where they live.
