FRANKLIN TWP — Ryan Pinkerton was determined to golf in the Butler Eagle County Amateur tournament, even if it led to a hectic weekend.

The resident of Kittanning was in New York for his job Saturday.

“I drove to my parents’ house in Butler, got six hours of sleep and came out here to see what I could do,” he said.

What Pinkerton did was better than what anyone else managed in the event, held Sunday at Lake Arthur Golf Club. His 3-under-par 69 in the afternoon round earned him first place in the event for the second time in three years. He won in 2024 at Slippery Rock Golf Club.

Jane Wymer carded a 73 to win the women’s division, and Bill Black’s 75 earned first place in the senior division (50 and over).

Pinkerton, who was two strokes better than runner-up Troy Loughry’s 71, adjusted his game Sunday.

“I usually hit my driver all over this place, but I laid up a few times (particularly on Nos. 4 and 10) just to be safe,” he said. “I had putts for eagle on 6 and 15 (both par-5s), ended up short both times and got birdie. My only bogey of the day came on the last hole (No. 4, 302-yard par-4).

“I didn’t even look at the scores from the morning and didn’t think 69 would have me in contention, but the course played tougher for a lot of people than I thought it would. I’m excited to win again, it’s just setting in for me right now. One hundred percent, I was going to make it here. I love golfing in this event.”

Loughry is a two-time winner of the Eagle Amateur. He won the last time the event was held here in 2023. He lost out on last year’s championship to Jeremy Plaisted on the second playoff hole at Hiland Golf Course.

“I golfed at BC3 and this was our home course,” Loughry, who scored four birdies and three bogeys, said of Lake Arthur. “The more you play a course, the better the feel you get for it. If you play this course smoothly, not try to hit it as far as you can off the tee, you can stay out of a lot of trouble.”

Slippery Rock High graduate Jacob Wolak, currently a member of the men’s golf team at Gannon University, finished third with a 73.

Wymer, of Penn Township, edged out Siena Smith (74) by a single stroke for the women’s title. It is the fourth time she has won the event (2012, 2013, 2018).

“I used to golf this course with my dad when I was a kid,” she said. “I did golf nine holes here last week just to refamiliarize myself with the course, because it had been a long time.”

Wymer tallied five birdies Sunday, including two on a pair of par-3s (2 and 17).

“I came close to a hole-in-one on both of those,” she said. “I can get up and down from anywhere. That’s the strongest part of my game.”

Last week, Wymer won her 13th Butler Country Club women’s championship and also took first place in the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur qualifier at Longue Vue Golf Club, which sends her to the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship next month in Portland, Ore.

“I love competition,” she said. “The date (of the Eagle Amateur) worked out this year for me, and I saw it as another chance to come out and golf.”
