Seneca Valley graduate gets community service scholarship
A recent graduate of Seneca Valley Senior High School received a college scholarship related to community service.
Luis Torrenegra received $2,000 through the Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation’s 2026 Community Service Scholarship. Torrenegra plans to attend Point Park University to study mechanical engineering.
The scholarship was created to honor the memory of Jamie Ellenberger, an individual served by Passavant Memorial Homes Family of Services who was an active member in the community. The foundation aims to award this scholarship to a student in the region who has that same understanding of the value of community service, according to an email from the foundation.
The foundation normally awards one $10,000 scholarship per year. But this year, it received so many applicants who were deserving of an award that its administrators honored two students with $5,000 scholarships and five students with $2,000 scholarships, totaling an unprecedented $30,000 in scholarships.
This year, the Passavant Memorial Homes Foundation received 78 applications across 15 counties in Western Pennsylvania, the foundation said.
