PIAA track and field: North Catholic’s Logan Schade wins gold in 400; Karns City’s Alex Wilson medals in pole vault
SHIPPENSBURG — The spring season began with Logan Schade simply looking to “have some fun.”
It ended with him being recognized as a state champion.
A senior at North Catholic, Schade capped his only season of running track by placing first in the PIAA Track and Field Championships Class 2A boys 400-meter run Saturday at Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium with a time of 48.86 seconds.
A 1,000-yard running back for North’s football team last fall, Schade had thought about joining the track team for several years.
“I didn’t want to get hurt for football,” he said. “My position coach, Terry Fisher, is also the track coach, and he urged me to come out.
“I was hoping to focus on the 100 and 200, but ran the 400 early in the season. It’s not my favorite event but the one I’ve done the best in. To win here today, it feels awesome.”
Schade ran Friday’s fastest preliminary time at 49.29, after which he rode back to Butler County for his high school graduation ceremony. He returned Saturday morning to Shippensburg.
Greensburg Central Catholic’s Jerry Davis was runner-up in the final, .44 seconds behind Schade. Dunmore’s Jacob Costanzo was .45 off the pace.
“I knew it was going to be a close race,” Schade said.
Addie Weaver and Audrey Wolfe came in together and went out together, in style.
Seneca Valley’s senior javelin throwers finished third and sixth in Class 3A with heaves of 141-9 and 134-9, respectively.
“We pushed each other in practices and at invites for four seasons, made each other better,” Wolfe said. “We both got to states last year, but for me, I wasn’t ready mentally to compete here. The competition at states is so much better than at WPIALs. This was our time (to shine).”
Weaver is headed to compete for Slippery Rock University while Wolfe has attracted attention from Penn State.
“I wanted to PR and place today,” Weaver said. “I did both, so I’m really happy right now. Audrey is my javelin buddy, and I’m gonna miss her in college.”
Karns City’s Alex Wilson knew he’d have some company on the medal stand, but not like this.
A junior, he went 14-6 in the Class 2A boys pole vault, finishing in a three-way tie for fourth place with Gavin Aikens of West Middlesex and Hayden Fox of Marion Center.
Oley Valley’s Jacob Mackie won the state crown with a height of 16 feet.
“I didn’t mind the event being moved inside. I didn’t want to deal with the cold,” Wilson said.
When asked what he plans to work on over the summer, Wilson replied swiftly.
“Get stronger. Way stronger. I’m a lightweight.”
North Catholic’s and Freeport’s girls closed the meet by placing third and seventh, respectively, in the 4x400 relay.
Following are the Butler County athletes who earned a medal by placing in the top eight at the PIAA Track and Field Championships, which concluded Saturday at Shippensburg University.
