Prison looking for new laundry dryers

The Butler County prison board is replacing the prison’s three original, 17-year-old laundry dryers.

Warden Beau Sneddon said $80,000 was placed in this year’s capital budget to replace the dryers, but there is a less expensive alternative.

He said the cost could be reduced to $45,000 if the existing, 170-pound capacity dryers are replaced with 120-pound capacity dryers.

The laundry machines run day and night. Two of the dryers are stuck on one setting.

“They’re kind of hodgepodged together and one is still fully functional,” Sneddon said.

He said staff has saved as many parts for the dryers as possible, but parts are no longer available.

“They’re hanging on by a thread, all three of them,” Sneddon said.

The board voted to look for dryers through the state’s COSTARS cooperative purchasing program or by advertising.
