Evans City touts snow removal efforts, plans next steps

Evans City officials during a meeting on Monday, Feb. 2, commended its public works department and other local partners for a multiday snow removal operation in its business district following a severe snowstorm late last month.

The large-scale effort ran from Jan. 27 through Jan. 30 and centered on restoring traffic lanes, improving pedestrian access and reducing long-term snow and ice buildup, according to a news release.

Evans City Public Works spearheaded the operation, along with support from the Evans City Water and Sewer Authority, Seneca Valley School District and private contractors.

The borough also contracted tri-axle truck drivers to haul snow out. Borough officials said donated equipment from Dubrook Concrete helped crews remove nearly 80 tri-axle loads of snow.

An agreement with Seneca Valley allowed the borough to utilize the upper parking lot of the former Evans City School as a temporary snow staging and dumping site.

Officials downplayed the chance for significant flooding based off where the snow was placed.

“The way we placed (the snow) over a hillside near a tributary, I’m not concerned with it based on our cooperation with Seneca Valley,” said Evans City director of operations Joe McCombs.

He noted the borough will still have to monitor the situation over the coming days and weeks.

“A lot of our catch basins right now are filled with snow and frozen,” McCombs said. “We will want to evaluate some of the catch basins and clear them off. We’re at the mercy of the temperature, but that’s our next move.”

Ice blockages on North Washington Street and other surrounding streets will be another concern as the snow melts, McCombs said.

Borough leaders also thanked all agencies and partners involved for their cooperation and commitment to keeping the heart of the borough safe and accessible.
