New York man sentenced to prison for forgery, theft

A New York man was sentenced Thursday, April 25, to five to 11 months in Butler County Prison and pay $4,000 in restitution after pleading guilty to felony forgery and theft charges filed following two incidents that occurred on the same day this year.

Glen K. Vargas, 51, was sentenced remotely from the prison where he is being held on $250,000 bail for each case.

He was charged with theft by deception and other charges by state police after he used a passport with another person’s name to withdraw $4,000 from the NexTier Bank branch in Evans City on Jan. 8.

A few hours later, Vargas tried to withdraw more money from that same account, but was denied after NexTier Bank contacted the real account owner about the fraud and alerted other branches about Vargas, police said.

Butler Township police filed forgery and other charges against Vargas after officers apprehended him for using an alias in an attempt to withdraw another $4,000.

For the incident in Evans City, he was sentenced to serve three to six months in prison and pay $4,000 in restitution to the bank.

In the Butler Township incident, Vargas was sentenced to consecutively serve two to five months in prison.
