Jackson Township to hold public hearing on stormwater authority

JACKSON TWP — Another municipality is moving forward with forming a joint authority to help prevent and mitigate flooding in the area.

On Thursday, April 18 the township supervisors voted unanimously to advertise a public hearing to talk about the township’s intention to join the Southwestern Butler County Stormwater Authority.

“It will be a collaboration of four municipalities working together to form an authority to work on stormwater ... within those four municipalities,” said township planning director Nikki Colton.

Zelienople, Lancaster and Evans City are the other three municipalities that will make up the stormwater authority.

Earlier this month, Evans City voted to join the joint authority.

The proposed authority will be set up to plan and fund long-term solutions to prevent and mitigate damages from flooding to the surrounding areas. Colton said she thinks it will be beneficial for local communities to work together to come up with solutions for the residents.

“This way there can be opportunities to get grant funding and put the communities together to address these issues,” she said

Several areas in the township are still dealing with the aftermath of two floods that occurred within an eight day span that left a campground underwater and caused a vehicle to be carried away by the water.

Colton said the public hearing will likely take place in two months.

“You have to advertise 30 days before the hearing,” she said. “(The supervisors) are thinking June.”

In other business, the township voted unanimously to approve the construction of a GetGo gas station and Aircomm Federal Credit union at the developing Jackson Village Shopping Plaza at the intersection of Little Creek Road and Route 19.
