Cranberry Township to host Earth Week events
Cranberry Township will celebrate Earth Week with special events and educational programs starting on Monday, April 22.
“Everyone is invited to help celebrate our environment by engaging in these planned community stakeholder events,” said Tina Fedko, director of communications for Cranberry Township. “There will be fun-filled educational sustainability events that will highlight the townships commitment to our beautiful environment.”
The celebration kicks off on Earth Day, April 22 at 4 p.m., when residents are invited to join township officials along with representatives from the Environmental Advisory Committee for an Earth Week kickoff event featuring the stream restoration project at the Jaycee Shelter at Community Park.
Along with highlighting the informational signage around the restoration project, the township will give away 50 backyard habitat starter kits during the event.
The kits include five flower bulbs — which are a mix of lily, tigridia and gladiolus — a pair of gardening gloves and a packet of pollinator seed mix.
Additionally, a raffle will be held for an upcycled art project recently created in the Cranberry Public Library’s Makerspace by youths who collaborated to create an art piece for the raffle.
“The Cranberry Township staff took the recyclables from our kitchen area — cans, bottles, plastics and Styrofoam — saved them and then the teens came in and they created these wonderful art projects from the recycled items,” Fedko said, noting the process is known as “upcycling.“
Tickets for the art project raffle will be sold at the event for $2, cash only, and are available for purchase at the Cranberry Township Municipal Center, 2525 Rochester Road.
On Wednesday, April 24, students from Haine Middle School will be co-hosting with Tim Schutzman, waterworks coordinator of engineering and environmental services for Cranberry Township, an informational session on water conversation that will include practical guidance on how to efficiently use a rain barrel.
The event will be at the Franklin Station Room in the municipal center from 6 to 7 p.m. Registration is $40 and includes a rain barrel.
