Lancaster Twp., church may share cost of softball league

LANCASTER TWP — There did not appear to be any angels in the outfield at the township superiors meeting Monday, April 15, when the Southwest Butler County Church Softball League proposed two cost-sharing arrangements.

The league asked the township to split the cost of renting Port-A-Johns and for a yearly $1,000 donation for maintenance and field improvements to improve the drainage at Bauder Park.

“They’re currently leasing the Port-A-Johns for three-and-a-half months at a cost of $315,” said supervisors chairman Greg Kessler. “They are asking us to split that 50/50. I don’t see a problem with that — it’s a public park — but we’ll make that decision later.”

Kessler did not sound as eager to accept the league’s request for the field maintenance donation.

“They stated it’s difficult to assign the out-of-pocket cost they had incurred,” he said. “Yet they’re asking for this $1,000. We need a lot more information from them.”

Kessler said the township already is responsible for mowing the grass and maintaining the area around the field and will seek more details.

The township had approved the softball league’s use of the field in May 2021.

Supervisors will vote on the new measures at the next meeting, according to Kessler.

Township accepts Rural Road project grant

Supervisors voted unanimously to accept a $230,000 grant from the Multimodal Transportation Fund for rural road projects.

Lancaster Township was one of several municipalities throughout Butler County that received funds last month from the state for projects that encourage economic development and ensure safe, reliable systems of transportation.

The next step is collaborating with PennDOT about which projects the area should pursue, said supervisor Tim Zinkham.

“We have ideas about which roads and projects we want to do,” Zinkham said. “But they are the experts, and we want their final approval.”

Once the township receives input from PennDOT, Zinkham said the next phase will be bringing the projects up before the supervisors for bids and voting.
