PIAA Track and Field: North Catholic’s Anna Lazzara adds another medal in long jump
SHIPPENSBURG — Anna Lazzara knew that her goals in the long jump this year would be tempered due to a nagging hamstring injury, originally suffered months ago during the indoor track and field season.
“I tweaked it again early in the spring,” the North Catholic junior said. “At that point, I focused most of my attention on the 100 (dash).”
While she also placed fifth in the 100 preliminaries Friday to qualify for Saturday’s PIAA Class 2A final, Lazzara managed 17 feet, 11 inches to earn an eighth-place medal in the long jump.
She went 18-0.25 here last year to place third in the state, and qualified this year by meeting the PIAA qualifying standard of 16-11 last week at WPIALs.
A steady rain began falling during Saturday’s competition and the temperature dipped below 60 degrees.
“I think it was 100% mental for me,” Lazzara said of the less-than-optimal weather conditions. “I was hoping for 18 feet today, but I could feel (the hamstring) tense up and that affected my mentality during the event.”
Strong Foundation
Last week, Seneca Valley freshman Tenny Voll basked in the glow of winning a WPIAL championship in the Class 3A girls pole vault.
There was no trip to the medal stand Friday, but Voll still came away from Shippensburg University’s Seth Grove Stadium with a feeling of accomplishment.
As the only freshman competing in a 24-vaulter field, Voll missed her three attempts at 10-6 and exited the event far sooner than she had hoped.
“The tailwind was really strong and I had trouble dealing with it,” said Voll, who reached 12 feet in winning her district title.
She trains at Steel City Pole Vault in Zelienople and hopes to further hone her craft at numerous camps this summer.
“I am really proud of what I did this season and can’t wait until next year,” she said.
