The PIAA high school football regular season comes to an end this week. After that: playoffs.

Butler is seeking an 8-2 finish (the Tornado are ineligible for the postseason) and are traveling north to Clarion University to face Central Clarion. Mars and Freeport have locked up WPIAL playoff spots, as has Karns City in District 9. North Catholic needs to beat Hopewell to assure itself a playoff spot; a loss leaves the Trojans’ playoff hopes up to tiebreakers.

Butler Eagle sports editor Jake Merda Adams, reporters Derek Pyda and Brendan Howe, and Scoop predict the winner and score of each local game this week, plus additional analysis for five of those games. Listen to this week’s “Eye On Sports” podcast wherever you get your podcasts for even more of a breakdown.

Standings after Week 9

Brendan Howe — 73-21 (9-2 last week)

Jake Merda Adams — 73-21 (10-1)

Scoop — 72-22 (10-1)

Derek Pyda — 69-25 (10-1)

FRIDAY’S GAMES

Butler at Central Clarion, at Clarion University Memorial Stadium, 7

Merda Adams — Butler (7-2) has a chance to win eight games in a season for the first time since 1990, when the Tornado went 9-3-1 under Tim Nunes. The last time they won eight regular-season games was in 1983, when they went 8-1 and went to the WPIAL semifinals. Butler 28, Central Clarion 20

Pyda — The Golden Tornado close out a historic season in style. Butler 35, Central Clarion 17

Howe — It’s safe to say that loss to Karns City last month upset the Wildcats, who’ve won three in a row, including an 86-0 result against Bradford. I’ve rarely picked against Butler this year, though. Butler 35, Central Clarion 31

Scoop — Butler puts an exclamation point on its best season in decades. Butler 42, Central Clarion 7

Freeport at Imani Christian, 7

Merda Adams — The Yellowjackets (7-2, 4-1 Allegheny 7) have a WPIAL playoff berth locked up, they have a banged up QB (and probably more players are a little sore) and Imani is just a class above. Focus turns to the playoffs quickly. Imani Christian 48, Freeport 14

Pyda — The Yellowjackets are too banged up to stay in this one. Imani Christian 40, Freeport 16

Howe — The Saints’ offense has been ridiculous as of late, posting wins of 61, 42 and 46 points. Imani Christian 35, Freeport 17

Scoop — The Saints wrap up the Allegheny 7 Conference title with an undefeated record. Imani Christian 33, Freeport 8

Karns City at Wilmington, 7

Merda Adams — The Greyhounds have beaten some solid teams during a 7-2 season. The Gremlins (7-2) could be the next victim, even after an impressive road win over Punxsutawney. Wilmington 35, Karns City 28

Pyda — District 10 edges District 9 in this battle of 7-2 teams. Wilmington 27, Karns City 20

Howe — The Gremlins have won four in a row, scoring an average of 40.2 points per game during that stretch. That’s a lot of offense. Karns City 34, Wilmington 21

Scoop — Teams used to scoring a lot of points will be held in check for a week. Wilmington 19, Karns City 12

Moniteau at St. Marys, 7

Merda Adams — All in all, a good season by the Warriors getting to three wins. Coach Clay Kohlmeyer talked in the preseason about building a foundation for the program. Looks like a good start. St. Marys 42, Moniteau 14

Pyda — The Flying Dutch are averaging just 62 passing yards per game. They’ll keep it on the ground, and be successful. St. Marys 36, Moniteau 21

Howe — A major portion of St. Marys’ schedule has been a gauntlet. The Warriors will put up another good fight. St. Marys 28, Moniteau 21

Scoop — Dutch running back Andrew Field will have a big game. St. Marys 31, Moniteau 10

North Catholic at Hopewell, 7

Merda Adams — Not sure what to make of these Trojans (6-3, 3-2 Western Hills), who looked nigh-unbeatable the first half of the season but have been outplayed almost every week since. The defense gives up way too many points right now to make a deep playoff run. Hopewell 42, North Catholic 31

Pyda — The Trojans will avoid their playoff hopes coming down to a tiebreaker, taking third place in the Western Hills Conference outright. North Catholic 38, Hopewell 33

Howe — North Catholic has a lot to figure out on the defensive side of the ball after giving up big play after big play last week against Avonworth. Hopewell 35, North Catholic 28

Scoop — The Vikings’ offense will be too much for the Trojans. Hopewell 53, North Catholic 47

Knoch at McKeesport, 7

Merda Adams — McKeesport 49, Knoch 7

Pyda — McKeesport 39, Knoch 7

Howe — McKeesport 63, Knoch 14

Scoop — McKeesport 41, Knoch 9

Mars at Indiana, 7

Merda Adams — Mars 42, Indiana 17

Pyda — Mars 38, Indiana 13

Howe — Mars 47, Indiana 6

Scoop — Mars 30, Indiana 0

North Allegheny at Seneca Valley, 7

Merda Adams — North Allegheny 42, Seneca Valley 17

Pyda — North Allegheny 30, Seneca Valley 20

Howe — North Allegheny 35, Seneca Valley 10

Scoop — North Allegheny 44, Seneca Valley 20

Mercer at Slippery Rock, 7

Merda Adams — Slippery Rock 27, Mercer 19

Pyda — Slippery Rock 36, Mercer 16

Howe — Slippery Rock 21, Mercer 7

Scoop — Slippery Rock 22, Mercer 6
