Man, 74, assaulted while walking to hotel room in Cranberry Township

A Natrona Heights man allegedly assaulted a 74-year-old man walking past his room in a Cranberry Township hotel, police said.

Jakob Michael Honaker O’Brien, 27, was charged Thursday, Sept. 25, with felony aggravated assault and one misdemeanor count each of strangulation, reckless endangerment and terroristic threats following the Wednesday incident.

Police said the 74-year-old man was walking back to his hotel room at Quality Inn in Cranberry Township and when the man walked by O’Brien’s room, O’Brien reportedly exited the room extremely agitated and approached the man.

Police said O’Brien punched the man six to eight times in his face and forehead. The man then turned away from O’Brien. O’Brien then reportedly bit the man on his back and neck, breaking the skin and leaving teeth marks.

Police said the man fell onto his back during the assault and O’Brien got on top of him and strangled him for about 10 seconds before other hotel customers saw and separated the two.

Police said O’Brien repeatedly screamed at the man throughout the incident that he was going to kill him.

The man told police the attack was unprovoked, and the two did not know each other. The man was transported to UPMC Passavant in Cranberry Township for his injuries.

O’Brien’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 3 before District Judge Kevin Flaherty. He’s being held in Butler County Prison on $100,000 bail.
