Evans City man charged in Zelienople assault
An Evans City man is accused of assaulting a man in a Zelienople alley in late May, according to police.
Austin M. Sammons, 29, was charged with felony aggravated assault, and one misdemeanor count each of simple assault and disorderly conduct following the alleged incident.
Police said they arrived in the area of North Milton Street on May 25 to find an assaulted man with actively bleeding lacerations and swelling on his face.
The man told police he approached a dark pickup truck parked in the alley behind his house around 12:30 a.m. to ask what the occupants were doing. When the man replied that the explanation didn’t make sense, Sammons reportedly exited the vehicle and began punching him.
Police said the man does not remember how long the altercation lasted and he may have lost consciousness for a short time. The man defended himself by striking Sammons once with his right hand, police said.
Cranberry Township EMS responded and took the man to UPMC Passavant-Cranberry. Police said the assaulted man was later transported to UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh after a CT scan uncovered multiple orbital bone fractures and a fractured nose.
Police said they investigated the alley where the assault allegedly occurred and found a large amount of blood and a hat that did not belong to the man. Police later tracked Sammons’ vehicle through surveillance cameras.
Sammons’ preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 11 before District Judge Amy Marcinkiewicz. He’s being held in Butler County Prison on a $25,000 bond.
