Washington’s Trail 1753 receives new audio tour signs

A decade after it launched, an audio tour retracing George Washington’s historic 1753 journey through Butler County has been given a fresh look.

Over that period of time, many of the original audio signs succumbed to weather conditions. But thanks to a partnership between Washington’s Trail 1753, Experience Butler County and the Butler County commissioners, all of the signs have been replaced.

“We were pleased to receive great local support for this project,” Martin O’Brien, president of Washington’s Trail 1753, said in a news release. “The tourism bureau provided a grant for improved signage with QR code links to our website, and the county bridge crew helped install them. It’s great that visitors and residents alike can easily connect with this important piece of local history.”

The tour features nine historic sites that are each marked with a sign offering a phone number and code to listen to what Washington experienced at that location.

More durable signs were installed in May at sites including Harmony, Portersville, Slippery Rock, Harrisville, Prospect, Evans City, Cranberry Township and the Old Stone House. Zelienople eventually will receive updated signage as part of its Main Street beautification efforts.

Anyone attempting to access the tour can call 412-254-2154 and enter code 449.
