State police record fewer fatalities, deaths, citations over July 4 weekend than in 2025

State police recorded 165 fewer crashes and 10 fewer deaths the weekend of July 4 compared with Independence Day weekend the previous year, according to statistics released Thursday, July 9.

From July 3 to 5 this year, state police recorded 635 crashes resulting in six fatalities and 128 injuries. One of the deaths was in Mercer County July 4 when motorcyclist Scott A. Arnold died in a two-vehicle crash in Wilmington Township.

Police cited 303 arrests for driving under the influence and recorded three DUI crash fatalities and 55 DUI crashes compared with 464 arrests, five deaths and 63 crashes related to DUI in 2025.

Police also issued 15,567 citations including 97 for failing to secure children in safety seats, 541 for failing to wear a seat belt and 4,034 for speeding. In 2025, police issued 22,446 citations including 135 child seat citations, 689 seat belt citations and 5,927 speeding citations.

The numbers only include incidents investigated by state police. July 4 weekend this year also included one fewer day than in 2025.
