Middlesex Township planning commission grants final approval to Amber Grove townhomes

MIDDLESEX TWP — The planning commission granted its final approval to land development plans for the Amber Grove townhome complex during its monthly meeting on Wednesday, June 24.

Plans call for the complex to consist of 89 townhomes on a 19.8-acre parcel situated along Route 228.

According to planning commission member Eric Schmidt, Amber Grove had come before the commission for both preliminary and final approval for their land development plans the previous month. While the preliminary plan was approved, the final plan — which has more stringent requirements — was rejected and adjustments were made to the plan for Wednesday night’s meeting to incorporate requested landscaping changes.

“Last month it came in for preliminary and final land development approval. Landscaping is generally looked at during final,” Schmidt said. “Last month we rejected it because it didn’t have street trees, which are part of the (township) ordinance and there was no location shown for a monument sign.”

The development has bounced back and forth through the township’s permitting process since 2022, when it was initially pitched as a mixed-use residential/commercial plan.

Although the plan was granted approval, the developers ultimately threw it out after a legal dispute with a neighboring community, Sienna Village, over access roads and submitted a new plan with no commercial space.

Prior to last month, Amber Grove was previously discussed at a board of supervisors meeting in October 2025 when the board granted the developers a conditional use permit.

The township’s board of supervisors gave its approval to the preliminary land development plan at its most recent meeting on June 17, and Schmidt said supervisors expected to vote on approval of the final land development plan in the near future.
