Lafayette Trail marker unveiling set for next week

Marquis de Lafayette, a Revolutionary War general who visited Butler County in the 1825.

The Butler County Commissioners are unveiling an historical trail marker commemorating Gen. Marquis de Lafayette’s contributions in the American Revolution and his visit to the county.

At 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, on the front lawn of the Butler County Courthouse, the commissioners will unveil a Lafayette Trail marker in honor of the 250th anniversary of American independence and Lafayette’s contribution to American freedom.

“Lafayette’s visit to Butler in 1825 is a proud moment in our county’s history,” said the Butler County Commissioners. “We are honored to help preserve and share that legacy as part of the nationwide Lafayette250 commemoration.”

During his 1825 visit, Lafayette was welcomed by local residents, escorted to Mechling’s Inn, and greeted by community leaders and Revolutionary War veterans.

The free public event will include brief remarks, the official unveiling, and photo opportunities. It’s estimated to last 45 minutes, with refreshments to follow in the courthouse rotunda.

The Lafayette Trail marker was donated to Butler County by Lafayette Trail, Inc., with funding from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

If it rains, the event will take place in the Butler County Government Center public meeting room. Those planning to attend are encouraged to reach out to lshah@co.butler.pa.us.
