The South Tower at Allegheny Health Network’s Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh is set to receive a $36 million renovation.

The 22-story facility is set to undergo a multiyear exterior restoration that will extend the life of the building and maintain its original architecture for generations to come, according to AHN.

The restoration work is anticipated to be completed by 2030 and will encompass an overhaul of the masonry facade, ornamental terra cotta and the replacement or restoration of the building’s more than 800 windows.

About 60,000 square feet of roofing will be repaired or replaced at multiple elevations. Work will aim to preserve the historic structure, including the iconic cathedral windows at the very top, according to a news release.

Mascaro Construction Company will be general contractor for the project. Hospital officials emphasize that patient care and hospital operations will not be affected at any time during work on the tower.

The hospital opened in 1885 as a 50-bed operation housed inside two adjoining brick homes on Pittsburgh’s North Side. The original hospital was replaced in 1904 by a seven-story, 400-bed facility with modern amenities, including an on-site laboratory and pharmacy.
