New York man accused of Lego larceny in Cranberry Township

Allegedly made fraudulent returns of high-value sets

A New York man is accused of fraudulently returning high-value Lego products to Target in Cranberry Township.

Oleksandr Shevchenko, 32, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was charged Friday, March 20, by Cranberry Township police with two felony counts of dealing in illegal funds, two misdemeanor counts of theft and misdemeanor receiving stolen property following a Feb. 3 incident.

Police said Shevchenko purchased Lego sets, removed the pieces from the box, resealed the box and returned it.

Surveillance footage showed Shevchenko entering the store with two Lego sets valued at $159.99 each and receiving a cash refund, police said. Police said he turned in the merchandise and a receipt from a Target in Greensburg and received a refund of $319.98.

Police also saw an unidentified accomplice purchase five high-value Lego sets and pay $1,462.75 before leaving the store and entering Shevchenko’s suspected vehicle.

Police said Shevchenko is believed to be involved in similar crimes along the east coast. His preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
