Man accused of theft in fraudulent wire transfer in Cranberry Township

A 34-year-old man is accused of stealing $1,200 through a fraudulent wire transfer at Walmart in Cranberry Township.

Luci Motreanu, 34, was charged Friday, March 6, by Cranberry Township police with felony charges knowledge that proceeds came from illegal acts and one misdemeanor count each of theft and receiving stolen property following an incident on Oct. 31.

Police said Motreanu visited the Walmart customer service desk and requested a Western Union wire transfer of $2,500. Police said he handed the cashier 26 $100 bills.

The cashier counted the bills, then police said Motreanu asked for the bills back to verify the count. Police said while counting, he removed $1,200 in bills from the bottom of the stack.

The cashier continued the transaction for $2,500 and did not recount the bills, police said.

Walmart discovered the error later when counting the drawer.

Police said Motreanu has multiple aliases and several active warrants.

His preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
