Union’s Bliss brothers qualify for PIAA swimming championships: Roundup

Union High School does not have a swimming team, but brothers Hudson and Harry Bliss have both turned in successful seasons while competing independently.

A freshman, Harry will enter the PIAA Class 2A Championships next week as a District 9 title-holder in the boys 100 breaststroke after finishing in a time of 1:00.22 last week at Clearfield High School. He also extended his season in the 50 freestyle by placing third (23.33).

Hudson, a senior, will swim the 200 IM and 100 backstroke after finishing second in both events at districts with times of 2:05.08 and 55.77, respectively.

Making the Class 2A state meet out of District 10 were three Slippery Rock swimmers.

Sophomore Roan Stauffer and freshman Jordan Eckenrode will be competing in the boys 100 backstroke after placing fourth (54.81) and seventh (55.61), respectively, at the district championship meet.

On the girls side, freshman Gianna Savannah placed third in the 200 freestyle (2:01.45) and fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:03.10) to make states in both events.

The PIAA Class 2A Swimming Championships will be held March 13-14 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.

Cam Christie’s goal with 4:46 left in the first period gave Knoch the lead, but it was short-lived.

Ringgold’s Nick Mahalko scored two minutes later, and the Knights never saw the lead again in a 5-4 PIHL Division II Penguins Cup quarterfinal Thursday night.

Trailing 4-1, Knoch received third-period scores from Synjun McHattie and Brady Linamen. When the latter scored again, a power-play goal with just 10 seconds left, it accounted for the final goal as Ringgold’s Brady Lippert had found the net nine minutes earlier.

Brady Helsel stopped 34 shots for the Knights (11-8-2-0).
