Penguins Cup playoffs: Butler falls, Mars wins in quarterfinals

Canon-McMillan’s Brayden Edgar scored three goals in a five-minute span of the third period to power the Big Macs to a 4-1 victory over Butler in a PIHL Class A Penguins Cup quarterfinal Tuesday at Printscape Arena.

The Golden Tornado tied the game at one with Anthony Trombatt’s goal just over six minutes into the third period. Edgar’s barrage began with 5:12 left in the game, with his final tally coming against an empty net.

Seamus Griffith and Jase Renwick were both credited with an assist for Butler. Harper Slater stopped 22 shots in defeat.

Mars 4, Plum 1 — Grant Weaver recorded a hat trick by the second period to lead the Planets to a win Monday in the Class A quarterfinals. His third goal was short-handed and made it 4-0. Xavier Bossola scored Mars’ other goal, and Carter Gallagher saved 27 of 28 shots.

The Planets will face the winner of Chartiers Valley vs. Quaker Valley (Thursday) in the semifinals March 11 at Robert Morris University’s Island Sports Center.
