Moniteau boys basketball comes up short of PIAA berth after District 9 third-place loss to Port Allegany

Moniteau boys basketball came up a win shy of making the PIAA tournament after a season that saw the Warriors make more noise than expected in the preseason.
The No. 2 Warriors lost the District 9 Class 2A third-place game, and with it the final spot in states the district has, 62-51 to No. 4 Port Allegany on Friday at DuBois High School.
Senior Brendin Sankey led Moniteau in his final game with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Andrew Zepeda scored 13, Ian Ross added 10 and Dawson Cook sank three 3s for all nine of his points.
The Gators jumped out 18-12 after one quarter, but the game remained close until the fourth quarter when Jarrod Funk scored 12 of his 14 points for Port.
