Slippery Rock girls wrestling’s Sophie Hensel wins District 10 medal; Knoch, North boys send several to WPIALs: Roundup
Sophie Hensel became Slippery Rock’s first district medalist Saturday, claiming silver in the District 10 Girls Wrestling Individual Championship at Sharon High School.
Hensel, 112 pounds, lost to Conneaut’s Daylee Watson by pin in the final. She pinned Girard’s Kendra Smith in the quarterfinals and won a high-scoring semifinal against Warren’s Bryndalyn Lindell.
The PIAA West Regional Tournament at Mt. Lebanon High School is Feb. 28.
Knoch’s Brayden McGowan won third at 152 pounds in the WPIAL Class 2A Northern Sectional tournament, one of a handful of local wrestlers to advance to next week’s district championships at Chartiers Valley High School.
Joining him is Anthony Jula (139 pounds, fourth), Keegan Orris (160, fifth) and Jack Nowicki (189, fifth). The Knights, however, are without middleweight standout Owen Layhew, who earlier this season became the program’s first to reach 100 wins. He is out with injury, coach Josh Orris said.
North Catholic sent through Michael Pierro (121, second), Victor Wagner (127, fifth), Angelo Amelio (133, second) Andrew Baird (215, third) and Brendan Valentine (285, sixth).
Summit Academy advanced Wyatt Elder (114) and Justin Sickels (215, fourth).
Slippery Rock at District 10 sectionals — Senior 160-pounder Zac Turberville won gold in the D10 Class 2A Section 2 tournament, needing a 4-1 decision over Greenfield’s Gavin Ryhal to claim the top spot and qualify for districts next week.
Also making the podium were Sam Caton (145 pounds, sixth), Aden Shay (152, third), Kolbie Magill (172, seventh) and Aiden Ward (285, eighth).
Butler took home several more medals one week before the indoor postseason begins, and again the Golden Tornado were led by their relays.
The girls’ 4x400-meter relay came in second at the fourth high school meet of the season at Youngstown State (Ohio) with a time of 4:20.42. The 4x200 finished fifth in 1:52.78.
Two boys teams finished top-five in the 4x400, with the “A team” claiming third in 3:39.07 and the “B” finishing fifth in 3:41.67. The 4x800 relay claimed second (8:13.41) and the 4x200 was fifth (1:38.49).
Other top-five boys finishers included: Carter Ekas (200 meter, fourth, 22.70), Brendan Eicher (fourth in the 1600 and 3200) and Brady Dumbaugh (60 hurdles, fourth, 8.68). For the girls: Zari Golojuh (3200, fourth, 11:39.32) and Gracy Vardy (high jump, tied-second, 5-2), who also got sixth in the triple jump.
Karns City’s Alex Wilson earned boys pole vault silver with a 14-0. Seneca Valley’s Noah Rieger snagged third in the 60-meter dash in 7.03 and seventh in the 200 (22.93).
Slippery Rock’s Samantha Montgomery finished third in the triple with a 34-7.25 and fifth in the long jump in 16-11.5.
North Catholic’s 4x800 girls relay won the race in 9:44.43, just three-hundredths of a second ahead of Mt. Lebanon.
