Knoch, North Catholic boys hoops share WPIAL section crown after wins: Roundup

Knoch boys basketball owned the second quarter against host Freeport, outscoring the Yellowjackets 24-8 Friday as the Knights grabbed a share of the WPIAL Section 1-4A title with a 59-37 victory.

Knoch (17-4, 11-1), which tied North Catholic atop the section standings, received 24 points from senior Teegan Finucan, and 11 apiece from Derek Lang and Vinnie DeFelice.

Gavin Tola scored 18 points for the Yellowjackets (6-13, 4-8).

North Catholic 81, Deer Lakes 77 — Jude Rottmann’s career-high 34 points helped the Trojans overcome a 13-point deficit after the third quarter to storm back and claim a share of the section title with Knoch.

North never led until Rottmann made a pair of free throws in the fourth quarter. Jason Fredericks added 22 points, Brandon Pickett 12 and Tom Rottmann 11.

Seneca Valley 41, Pine-Richland 40 — The Raiders left no doubt as to their WPIAL playoff chances, edging the host Rams to solidify a spot in the upcoming Class 6A tournament.

Nico Santapau hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points to lead SV (13-8, 8-6).

Fox Chapel 75, Butler 51 — The Golden Tornado fell to 6-14 overall and 4-10 in Section 1-6A action. No other details were available.

Brookville 57, Moniteau 41 — The Warriors (12-6) struggled on offense in this loss to the Raiders, with Dawson Cook leading the team with 11 points.

Chartiers Valley 74, Mars 58 — The Planets (9-12, 5-7) received 20 points from Austen Wroblewski and 14 from Ben Detisch.

Grove City 64, Slippery Rock 33 — Fred Campagna scored 10 points for the Rockets.

Girls basketball

Emily Matz tallied 11 points and 14 rebounds in Moniteau’s 47-19 victory over Clarion.

Alyssa Thompson added nine points for the Warriors (7-11).

Slippery Rock 50, Hickory 28 — Madison Romanovich had another double-double of 28 points and 13 rebounds, adding five assists and three steals in another Rockets’ rout.

Brielle Jordan added 10 points, and Vanessa Hinkle chipped in eight points and 11 boards.
