Man turned in front of pickup truck in fatal crash

A 96-year-old Butler man who died Friday, Jan. 30, in a two-vehicle accident in Penn Township made a turn in front of an oncoming pickup, police said Wednesday.

Donald Callen Jr. was driving a minivan south on Route 8 when he turned left onto Airport Road in front of a northbound truck driven by Ryan Napier, 47, of Karns City, township police said.

“He made a left turn in front of a northbound pickup truck,” said Sgt. Cheryl Cranmer.

Napier is not facing charges. Road conditions were not a factor in the accident, Cranmer said.

Callen died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck. His death has been ruled an accident, Coroner Korynne Young said.

A medical helicopter was called to the scene, but was canceled 10 minutes later.

Penn Township Volunteer Fire Department, Butler Township Volunteer Fire District, Middlesex Township police and Butler Ambulance Service assisted the Penn Township police.
