As if Seneca Valley girls basketball’s perfect section record wasn’t enough, the Raiders have breezed through their WPIAL 1-6A slate with little, if any, trouble.

SV (11-5 overall) improved to 7-0 in section play with a 48-27 win at home Thursday against Butler.

The Raiders have defeated section foes by an average of nearly 20 points per game. Their closest encounter was a 10-point win over North Hills in late December.

“We’ve learned to put the hammer down, and not let teams back in the game,” Raiders coach Dorothea Epps said.

SV will carry a seven-game winning streak into Saturday’s game at North Hills. During that span, the team’s starting lineup has remained constant — Reece McFadden, Makayla Canty, Ella Omasits, Natalie Hambly and Brooke Dufford.

“I don’t like to change our starting lineup when we’re winning,” Epps said. “But we have two other girls, Erica Rebovich and Taylor Dixon, who are very capable of starting. We call the group our Sensational Seven.”

SV’s starters combined to score 41 points Thursday in a game that reached the mercy rule in the fourth quarter. Reserves finished the game on both sides.

For Butler, coach Mark Maier is dealing with substantial injuries. Ashton Huff was lost for the season in November. Point guard Malina McElroy has missed five straight games with a bad shoulder, and Julianna Lockwood, one of the team’s top players off the bench, was in street clothes Thursday.

And yet, the Golden Tornado (10-9, 3-5) are in the thick of the race for a playoff spot.

“That’s what we keep telling the girls,” Maier said. “I liked our effort tonight. Seneca Valley is just a better team.”
