Some Butler County residents awake to 3 inches of snow Tuesday

Temperatures to hover around 22 degrees

Residents in parts of Butler County awoke to three inches of snow Tuesday, Dec. 30, after winter weather persisted overnight.

The U.S. National Weather Service in Pittsburgh reported seeing three inches of snow fell in the Northeastern part of the county.

A spokesperson said the weather service had not received many reports yet about the amount of snowfall in other areas, but he said three inches of snow were also reported in the Northern Hills of Allegheny County.

Residents can report the amount of snowfall in their area to the U.S. National Weather Service by calling 412-262-1988.

The weather service said the banded nature of the snow showers resulted in some places getting lots of snowfall quickly while some only got about half an inch.

The most persistent band it recorded was south of Pittsburgh with snow accumulation around five inches.

Snow may still fall for the next several hours, but the weather service expects snow bands to lose organization in the afternoon.

Snow accumulation will slow Tuesday afternoon, but snow is still possible in the northern region of the county.

PennDOT has 38 plow trucks active in the county working around the clock to treat roads, according to Tina Gibbs, the community relations coordinator for District 10.

“With fresh snow and wintry winds expected, we’re reminding motorists to slow down, pay attention and use caution on area roadways, especially during snow squalls or low-visibility conditions that may occur,” she said.

Gibbs said squalls can strike with little to no warning and create icy conditions when combines with falling temperatures and blowing snow drifts.

Some power outages are also being reported throughout the county. Fewer than 20 were reported in the area of the Old Stone House in Brady Township, along East Slippery Rock Road just outside Chicora and near Dinnerbell Road in Penn Township.

First Energy Corporation said West Penn Power is experiencing outages across its service area, and restoration estimates will be available later today. Other outages are pending investigation or have crews dispatched.

The weather service said temperatures for the county will reach 22 degrees Fahrenheit, but wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph in the morning will keep the wind chill in the single digits. Wind gusts are expected to slow slightly to 25 to 30 mph Tuesday afternoon.

The weather service also anticipates some snowfall overnight with 0.5 inches to an inch of accumulation.

On Wednesday, temperatures are expected to climb back toward 30 degrees Fahrenheit, but winds will persist. The wind chill temperature will be in the upper teens, the weather service said.

Another storm is expected late New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day with three to five inches of snow accumulation.
