HERMAN — It was the Saturday before Christmas when friends and relatives of the Lovich family gathered in holiday costumes outside illuminated by a roaring fire and the glow of countless colorful lights to enjoy some cheer.

Guests of Dereke and Mandy Lovich knew they arrived at the right place when they see the archways of Christmas lights over Kriley Grove Lane, a country road where the Loviches and other family members live, and hear holiday music playing.

There is more to see as the Loviches yard is decorated with the abominable snow monster, Yukon Cornelius, Rudolph and other characters from the animated classic Christmas movie “Island of Misfit Toys,” as well as reindeer, Santa, elves and candy canes. Old trucks, farm equipment, a camper, barn, corn bin, trees and the house are decorated with too many lights to count. Dereke said it takes three weeks to put everything up.

Mandy said the gathering started last year when some family members were outside by the fire, and friends and neighbors driving by would stop and talk. So she and Dereke decided to do it again this year.

“It was a hit. We had music on as cars came by and they stopped to talked,” Mandy said. “Last year we had cars coming up the driveway until 2 a.m.”
