$1.55 million settlement includes agreement for additional staff training, price audits

An investigation led by the Pennsylvania attorney general found widespread instances where Dollar General overcharged customers at the register.

In a Tuesday, Dec. 9, news release, Attorney General Dave Sunday announced a $1.55 million settlement with Dollar General Corp. and its parent company, Dolgen Corp, regarding consumers being charged higher prices than what was labeled and advertised on shelves.

“Our investigation found widespread and repeated instances of Pennsylvanians being overcharged at checkout — blatant deception of customers all over the Commonwealth,” Sunday said. “We are hopeful the corporation takes this settlement very seriously as Pennsylvanians expect to pay the price that is on stickers and labels.”

The investigation uncovered numerous occasions when consumers were charged higher prices at registers at Dollar General, which operates more than 900 retail locations throughout Pennsylvania — many within Butler County.

Further, Dollar General stores failed more than 40% of pricing accuracy inspections between 2019 and 2023, the attorney general said.

Dollar General, though the settlement, will pay $1.55 million to the state in penalties and costs, and agreed to improve its business practices by adding employee training and sufficient staffing, holding at least two unannounced pricing audits during each fiscal year, and taking steps to correct all known price inaccuracies within 24 hours.
