WPIAL Soccer: Why Seneca Valley’s boys aren’t satisfied after 3-1 quarterfinal win over Canon-McMillan
JACKSON TWP — From the sideline, Owen Eastgate glared at the field ahead of him, impatiently waiting to be re-inserted in the waning minutes of the match.
The Seneca Valley senior boys soccer forward asked his coaches at least twice when he was allowed back in, animatedly urging officials to make calls and showing exasperation when a Raiders’ play didn’t lead to another goal.
He played out the final minute of Saturday afternoon’s 3-1 WPIAL Class 4A quarterfinal playoff win over Canon-McMillan, making an example that his team should be playing every game like its last. Even if, at that point, it was well in hand.
Seneca Valley (16-2) advances to play No. 1 Peters Township, a 1-0 winner over No. 8 North Allegheny on Saturday, at a time and site to be determined.
“We want to play and be in control every second of every game,” Raiders coach George Williams said. “That’s how competitive we are, how competitive these players are. That’s kind of the frustration. If we’re not, we get frustrated.”
Williams felt Seneca Valley put on one of it most complete efforts of the season, notching the first three markers of the day.
Sophomore midfielder Connor Mackrell opened the scoring in the 13th minute, finishing off the job that Zach White began after the latter’s try glanced off the hand of the Big Macs’ diving goalkeeper. Nine minutes later, Eastgate fired another one past Preston Godown after Jacob Prex chipped it ahead to him.
Michael Pokrzywinski deposited a breakaway goal four minutes out of halftime. Eastgate was yellow-carded late after tackling a Canon-McMillan player from behind, keeping true to his non-stop mantra.
“I really was kinda mad at myself just because I got the yellow card with seven minutes left,” Eastgate said. “I just wanted to play that last seven minutes. The team played great today. 3-1 is a good result.”
As the No. 4 seed, the Raiders had earned a bye into the round. The Big Macs (14-3) entered by way of a 9-0 win over No. 12 Hempfield.
“It’s a long time off, and actually sometimes it’s a little concerning,” Williams said. “We actually did have a couple guys dinged up a little bit, so it was actually good to be able to rest a few guys. ... It’s a little work to try to keep everybody focused. It’s like another preseason almost.”
Canon-McMillan got on the scoreboard in the 57th minute when the ball found its way in from a jumble of bodies in front of the net.
“I think it actually went off of one of our guys,” Williams said.
