Marburger Dairy
Marburger Dairy is a locally owned and operated facility that has remained in the family for over 170 years.
In 1838, George Marburger Sr. arrived in Baltimore from Germany. In 1842, he purchased 100 acres in Evans City for $1.25 per acre.
In 1923, his son, Adam, who had previously maintained the area raising draft horses, converted the farm to a dairy operating facility.
Just over 10 years later, Adam and his wife bought a small dairy farm at May Stop and produced three cases of quart bottles on the first day of operation. Milk was shipped to the nearby city of Pittsburgh via the Harmony Line streetcars.
The operation grew and a few years later the dairy was moved to the homestead farm where it remains today. Adam’s sons, Martin, Vernon and Joe, operated the dairy as partners until the death of Joe in 1968. Vernon died in 1983 and Martin in 2011.
Martin’s son, Jim, was president of the family business for 20 years before his untimely death in 2022. Jim was the driving force of the dairy’s expansion.
Craig Marburger and Carrie Marburger-Robb, along with Jim’s cousins, Richard and Larry Marburger, continue the legacy Jim strived for along with many other long-term employees.
“Although our own facility milks well over 100 cows twice a day, it is not enough to fulfill the demand,” the family said. “We ship in milk from approximately 70 nearby farms, all of whom have signed RBST free pledge. Four days a week 25,000 plus gallons of milk are processed, bottled, cooled, shipped or delivered with the help of over 90 employees.
“So where does it all go? Nearly 1,800 home deliveries are made each week and over 2,500 schools, hospitals, restaurants and other businesses are served as well.”
The Marburger Farm Dairy commitment is three-part:
■ Quality — “We have a strong commitment to bringing you quality products.”
■ Service — “You will find us friendly from customer service reps to delivery drivers.”
■ Value — “Competitive prices with a great taste.”
