High school football Week 8 picks: Can Butler win a 7th? Does Freeport rebound? Mars win at McKeesport?
Butler football learned Wednesday evening it had accomplished something it hadn’t since 1997.
Win six games.
Eric Christy’s group is now 6-1 after Westinghouse informed the Golden Tornado it had to forfeit the Week 5 game due to an ineligible player. They visit Taylor Allderdice for a rare 3:30 kickoff Friday. In other local action, Freeport seeks to rebound after its first loss a week ago, and Mars faces a test at McKeesport.
Butler Eagle sports editor Jake Merda Adams, reporters Derek Pyda and Brendan Howe, and Scoop predict the winner and score of each local game this week, plus additional analysis for five of those games. Listen to this week’s “Eye On Sports” podcast wherever you get your podcasts for even more of a breakdown.
Brendan Howe — 55-18 (6-4 last week)
Jake Merda Adams — 55-18 (6-4)
Scoop — 54-19 (6-4)
Derek Pyda — 51-22 (4-6)
Butler at Taylor Allderdice, 3:30
Merda Adams — Butler (6-1) won this game last year 7-0. Expect there to be a few more points this week in the sun. But I don’t think it’ll be the same outcome. Taylor Allderdice 33, Butler 20
Pyda — An afternoon game at Cupples Stadium. The Tornado, who have played just one road game all season, will be a bit out of their element. Taylor Allderdice 27, Butler 19
Howe — The Golden Tornado dealt with a University (W.Va.) team with size and offensive firepower. Eric Christy’s team continues its successful season. Butler 28, Taylor Allderdice 20
Scoop — The Tornado will have to wait a week for their seventh victory. Taylor Allderdice 21, Butler 16
Hopewell at Freeport
Merda Adams — Hopewell has feasted on two inferior foes the last two weeks. Interesting discover: the Vikings have five receivers with at least 14 catches and 230 yards. Remarkable balance. Freeport 42, Hopewell 37
Pyda — The ’Jackets are an angry bunch after suffering their first loss of the season. They’ll have just enough against a talented Vikings squad. Freeport 28, Hopewell 26
Howe — Hopewell quarterback James Armstrong has offers from Penn State, Pitt and North Carolina — as a sophomore. The Vikings’ air game pushes them past the Yellowjackets. Hopewell 35, Freeport 24
Scoop — Hopewell’s offense has a lot of weapons, but Freeport’s defense will make enough plays against them. Freeport 28, Hopewell 25
Mars at McKeesport, 7
Merda Adams — This is going to be a battle of two really good running games. Kemon Spell is special and ran roughshod over Mars’ defense last year for a combined 482 yards and five TDs, but the Planets’ D seems better this season. Still, picking the home team. McKeesport 37, Mars 31
Pyda — Running back Kemon Spell is back in McKeesport’s lineup after an injury, rushing for 271 yards and five TDs the last two games. McKeesport 27, Mars 21
Howe — Mars whacked West Mifflin, which kept it close with the Tigers last week. Hmm. Mars 14, McKeesport 13
Scoop — I see the Tigers winning a close, low-scoring game. McKeesport 15, Mars 10
Slippery Rock at Titusville, 7
Merda Adams — Slippery Rock (2-5, 0-3 District 10, Region 4) is 2-1 on the road and 0-4 at home this year. But more important than that, Titusville’s lone win came against a team (Warren) averaging just 7.9 points. Slippery Rock 28, Titusville 20
Pyda — In the battle of the Rockets, Slippery Rock’s ground game will be the difference. Slippery Rock 34, Titusville 17
Howe — Larry Wendereusz’s Rockets snap a two-game skid against a foe who’s been outscored 83-17 over its past two outings. Slippery Rock 29, Titusville 16
Scoop — Titusville won this matchup last year in lopsided fashion. Slippery Rock returns the favor. Slippery Rock 37, Titusville 8
Brockway at Karns City, 7
Merda Adams — Karns City 35, Brockway 17
Pyda — Karns City 44, Brockway 17
Howe — Karns City 33, Brockway 10
Scoop — Karns City 50, Brockway 10
Knoch at Hampton, 7
Merda Adams — Hampton 43, Knoch 7
Pyda — Hampton 38, Knoch 12
Howe — Hampton 28, Knoch 6
Scoop — Hampton 34, Knoch 17
North Catholic at Beaver, 7
Merda Adams — North Catholic 35, Beaver 21
Pyda — North Catholic 41, Beaver 23
Howe — North Catholic 28, Beaver 27
Scoop — North Catholic 57, Beaver 33
Seneca Valley at Hempfield Area, 7
Merda Adams — Hempfield 38, Seneca Valley 24
Pyda — Hempfield 30, Seneca Valley 27
Howe — Seneca Valley 21, Hempfield 20
Scoop — Hempfield 18, Seneca Valley 17
Smethport at Union/A-C Valley, 7
Merda Adams — Union/A-C Valley 49, Smethport 17
Pyda — Union/A-C Valley 51, Smethport 13
Howe — Union/A-C Valley 35, Smethport 7
Scoop — Union/A-C Valley 41, Smethport 0
Summit Academy at Northgate, 7
Merda Adams — Northgate 43, Summit Academy 21
Pyda — Northgate 26, Summit Academy 24
Howe — Summit Academy 27, Northgate 21
Scoop — Northgate 48, Summit Academy 42
Moniteau at Union City, 7
Merda Adams — The Bears have scored just 63 points in six games. As long as Brendin Sankey can get some traction, I think the Warriors’ (2-5) run game is just strong enough to lead the way to a win. Moniteau 21, Union City 14
Pyda — I expect a big night from the Warriors’ offense. Moniteau 45, Union City 14
Howe — This is turning out to be a pretty solid season in Clay Kohlmeyer’s first year as head coach, huh? Moniteau 23, Union City 14
Scoop — Remember the Warriors’ two wins this season against Coudersport and Bucktail? Rinse and repeat. Moniteau 27, Union City 7
