Mars school board progresses work on roof repair

ADAMS TWP — Members of the Mars Area School Board voted unanimously to continue working out the details of a partial roof repair during a workshop meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 12.

The aging roof at MArs Area High School suffered wind and storm damage, prompting officials to act for fear that it could cause additional damage to the inside of the auditorium, superintendent Mark Gross said.

The board approved a quote from BurMac Commercial Roofing for $176,200. While that amount will be drawn from capital project funds, the approval helps pave the way for part of the repair to be covered by the school district’s insurance.

“This is to get it moving, but we’re still working with the insurance adjuster to get a final number,” Gross said. “So the repair cost is the repair cost, but the reimbursement to us through insurance could change for our betterment.”

Gross said the repairs will not be completed before the school year begins on Aug. 21, but instead he hopes it will wrap up “shortly thereafter.”

Additionally, after that section is taken care of, he said the district has already set aside funds to replace the rest of the roof at a later date.

“We have the whole roof budgeted, but I can’t give a time frame for that as of now,” he said.

Elementary project update

At the regular meeting set for Tuesday, Aug. 19, board members are set to receive a presentation from Mark Scheller of Eckles Architecture and Engineering as they seek to rebid the elementary school project that came in over budget earlier this year.

“Next week, he will be sharing the changes with the board and the community on what we’ve done to try to bring it under that budget,” Gross said, adding that any rebid “most likely wouldn’t occur until around October.”

Gross said officials still have an anticipated timeline for the project’s completion and should gain further clarity on more specific dates next week.
