Jeremy Plaisted of Cranberry reacts to sinking a birdie put on the 11th hole of Hiland golf course to win the tournamnt. Harold Augthon/Special to the Eagle.
SUMMIT TWP — Jeremy Plaisted estimates that he’d golfed in the Butler Eagle County Amateur 20 previous times. He performed well in many of them, but never quite good enough to win.
That fact had to make his walk off the No. 11 green Sunday at Hiland Golf Course a bit sweeter.
Plaisted, a Cranberry Township resident, had survived a playoff against Troy Loughry, a recent two-time champion of this event. Plaisted birdied the 370-yard, par-4 No. 11 while Loughry had to settle for par. Both players had birdied No. 10 to begin the playoff after finishing regulation with identical 1-under-par 69s.
“I hit a good drive on 11 (a dogleg left), then had a chip and was able to get up and down,” said Plaisted, who is a member at Slippery Rock Golf Club where he carded a pair of 63s over the last two weeks. He’s known for his long drives, and on the final hole, his tee shot ended up less than 10 yards from the green.
“It was about 360 yards, so yeah, I can drive the ball pretty well, but there are a lot of holes on this course where I didn’t use a driver. There’s lots of roll out there.”
Loughry, who won the amateur in 2022 and 2023, also had a good tee shot on what turned out to be the final hole.
“I hammered it down the middle, but then had a wedge shot that kicked to the left on me,” he said. “I shot a 67 to win here in 2022. I know Jeremy and he’s a really good golfer.”
Plaisted learned he was two strokes off the lead with four holes left, then managed two birdies.
“I had finished second in this tournament three or four times, so it feels great to win,” he said.
A third golfer, Jeremy Enslen, carded a 69 Sunday morning, but left before Plaisted and Loughry tied him and was not present for the playoff.
Chloe Fritch took it easy on herself, but not on the rest of the women’s field.
Her 2-over-par 74 topped 11 other women’s golfers to earn the Karns City graduate her third consecutive title.
“I’m a perfectionist. I’m very competitive, want every shot to be perfect and I never seem to be satisfied,” Fritch said after being recognized as the women’s champion. “Sometimes I have to ease up on myself because no golfer can place every shot exactly where they want it.
“I can honestly say I’m super-proud with how I played today.”
Fritch had two double-bogeys and a pair of bogeys, but also birdied four holes. Her win last year at Slippery Rock Golf Club came while wearing a brace after she tore her ACL while playing basketball her junior year of high school. She carded an 81 and won by a single stroke.
“Last year was kind of a reconstruction year for me, in a good way,” Fritch said. “It forced me to look at my game and I had to learn to swing all over again.
“I won last year and I wasn’t going to complain about that, but I knew I was capable of playing better. I used to play here (at Hiland) a lot when I was little, so it’s a course I’m familiar with.”
Fritch, who won two District 9 individual girls titles with the Gremlins, will soon be golfing for Mount Aloysius College.
“I’m looking forward to golfing on a team with other girls, which I’ve never had the chance to do,” she said. “I’m excited to play in the competitive atmosphere that comes with college.”
