Cranberry Township green lights major storm sewer upgrades

Cranberry Township supervisors approved contracts for four storm sewer projects during a meeting Thursday, June 26.

The move marks an investment of more than $528,000 in infrastructure upgrades aimed at reducing flooding near several heavily trafficked residential areas.

The largest of those projects is slated for Wyndmere Drive, where Quigley Development will carry out storm sewer upgrades at a cost of $174,940.

Other approved projects include:

  • Pinebrook Drive culvert replacement, awarded to Metarko Landscaping & Excavating for $128,400.
  • Northfield Road storm sewer upgrades, awarded to Fryer Excavating for $136,266.
  • Wayne Drive storm sewer upgrades, awarded to Jet Jack Inc. for $88,600.

Township officials received upward of a dozen bids for each project after supervisors authorized the bidding during a meeting in late May.

“Happy to say each one of them came in well under our budgeted amounts, so we’re very happy about that,” said Michael Malak, the township’s director of engineering and environmental services.

Those capital projects largely were funded through stormwater utility fees implemented about five years ago, according to township manager Dan Santoro.

“Those are the stormwater dollars at work making aggressive improvements to our infrastructure,” he said at the meeting. “That’s an example of a lot of good projects that are being done by the new program we put in place.”

According to the township’s website, the $6 monthly fee helps meet stormwater regulations mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Santoro noted all four projects will begin this summer and should be completed “by the end of this year.”
